My 44th Birthday

The Lord gave us a real treat on my birthday. At 1 am we received an SMS from a friend that it was snowing and lept from the bed (ok I rolled out of bed) and opened the curtains to see not just flakes falling but a yard covered in snow. Susan and I discussed it a bit (since it was 1 am) and decided to wake the kids for an excursion into the wintery wonderland. Kyle was the only one who chose the warmth of the bed over the excitement of cold snow. We had a blast making snowballs and throwing them at each other as the snow continued to drift gently to the ground. It was great packing snow and we had some awesome snowballs. We even put one in the freezer to memorialize an event that hadn't occurred since 1981 in Joburg.

Then we decided to make a snowman. Who would have thought that in Joburg snowman could exist, but he did and even lasted until noon the next day. Frosty he wasn't, but here is a picture of him with his creators.

In case some of you remember the write-up last year on snow, let me differentiate this experience fromt the last one. Last year we had snowflakes (I admit that they were hard to see in the picture but they were there), and this year we had snow. It even made a wonderful picture in the brilliant sun of the morning.

The day ended with a satisfied birthday recipient enjoying his rhubarb pie and coconut cake, surrounded by his family and having been declared the 44th President of the USA. The kids colored a picture of all the presidents and since there are only 43, they made this Canadian born man #44. It doesn't get much better than this!
